Dick Van Dyke celebrated his 90th birthday on Saturday, and it was quite the show.
Disney helped honor one of the biggest stars in its history, as the Mary Poppins actor visited Disney Land and heard park guests sing “Happy Birthday” to him, according to a People report.
But that was nothing compared to what was in store for him at The Grove in Los Angeles, as a flash mob surprised him while in costume as Burt, his character from Mary Poppins. They all danced to the music of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” the iconic number for the 1964 film.
Then, Van Dyke joined the group to sing Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”
Disneyland also unveiled a silhouette of the chimney sweep character Van Dyke played as part of the Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe at the park.
Van Dyke later tweeted: “I am very grateful that at 90 years old, I can still go out and play.”
He published a book titled “Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths About Aging.” The book offers advice to seniors to stay fit as they age.
It may sound like a lot of money, but the $4 billion Disney paid for Lucasfilm in 2012 is chump change compared to what the company is going to make off the Star Wars franchise in the coming years.
If the release of three blockbuster films that are likely to make all of that up and more aren’t enough, just think of the action figures and merchandise that will be sold on top of that — add it all up and Disney could make some serious bank on this deal, according to a Wired report.
Even without the films, the Star Wars franchise has long been a money-maker, and the three new films to close out the nine-film series that will be released in the coming years will likely prove Disney’s investment to be a wise one.
Back in January, the company relaunched a Star Wars comic book from Marvel, and sold a million units. The company also rolled out 100 new Star Wars toys, again a massive hit that should reap $2 billion in retail sales by the end of the year alone. Add up all those factors, and you can see how quickly that $4 billion Disney spent will be wiped away.
Directing the new Star Wars film is a lot different from tackling the Star Trek universe, Abrams said.
Director J.J. Abrams has a lot riding on his shoulders this weekend as the much anticipated release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens approaches.
Abrams has always been a Star Wars fan, and he recalls seeing “A New Hope” in theaters at the age of 11 all the way back in 1977 — now, he’s hoping to recreate that experience for many millions of fans this upcoming weekend, according to a Los Angeles Times report.
Abrams is going old school with the new Star Wars movie, staying away from the CGI that dominated the three films that followed the original trilogy and relying more on puppets as the original films did.
The director took a similar approach with Star Trek, focusing on the roots of the franchise. But Star Wars was a different animal, he said in an interview with the Times. He said that the Force is the heart of Star Wars that makes it “almost antithetical to science-fiction.”
He said that the film is more about the underdog who crosses paths with a person that will become very important. There’s also an underlying sense of humor in the series.
Abrams admits he’s a bit nervous about the reception to the movie, but he feels he’s done the best he could and doesn’t worry too much about the outcome or how it will be received.
Mad Max, Fargo earned plenty of recognition from critics.
It’s time for the 21st annual Critics’ Choice Awards, which unveiled its nominations today.
Mad Max: Fury Road was quite the critical darling, earning 13 nominations. On the television side, Fargo got eight nominations, the most among any of the other shows, according to an E Online report.
Mad Max also got the most coveted nomination: the one for Best Picture, and the highly rated film could be the one to beat in pretty much every category. Charlize Theron also got a nod for Best Actress, and Tom Hardy got a Best Actor nomination. Director George Miller could take home the Best Director award — and then, of course, the film got scores of nominations for makeup, special effects, and costumes.
Other films got lots of recognition, like The Martian, The Revenant, and Carol. Spotlight, The Big Short, and The Hateful Eight also earned plenty of recognition.
The Critics’ Choice Awards will be held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and will be aired on A&E, Lifetime, and LMN on Jan. 17.
She posted an unfiltered photo of herself and sarcastically urged critics say “mean things.”
Melanie Griffith is tired of internet bullies, and she’s taking them head on in a new Instagram post.
Griffith finalized her divorce from Antonio Banderas a week ago, and the 58-year-old posted an unfiltered selfie on her Instagram, urging her critics to “say some more mean things,” according to a People report.
She added: “Here ya go. Unfiltered. I’m 58. And I’m in Hawaii Five O playing Scott Caan’s Mom. Go ahead… Say some more mean things. Merry Christmas.”
Some might argue she was actually fishing for compliments, and she certainly got it from fans, who sent her positive messages about her looks, with some saying she should go unfiltered more often.
Griffith was responding to people who slammed her three days ago when she posted a photo of her legs as she was on a beach in Hawaii, with many people saying that they looked like a man’s legs.
Griffith has been in the process of divorcing Banderas for a while now. The two announced the divorce in June 2014 but didn’t figure out how to divide their earnings until December 4. They ultimately decided to split the money they earned from films in the last decade, and Griffith will get a monthly payment of $65,000, as well as the house in Aspen.
It’s part of a special TV show called “Jill & Jessa.”
Josh Duggar’s series of scandals has had a profound effect on his sisters.
In the new TLC special “Jill & Jessa: Counting On, ” which will air on Sunday night, two of the stars of the now besmirched “19 Kids and Counting” Duggar family tell all, and that includes the devastating revelations about Josh Duggar’s personal life, according to a Fox News report.
The scandals, which began with revelations that Josh Duggar fondled his siblings at a younger age and the incidents were covered up and continued with reports that he was one of the names on the AshleyMadison.com website that was hacked recently, have led to the “19 Kids and Counting” show being canceled.
The reality show had followed around evangelical Arkansas parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and their 19 kids. But the show ended in May after a firestorm of controversy erupted after it was revealed that Josh had molested four of his sisters and the baby sitter.
Tonight will be the first of three “Jill & Jessa” specials. But the sisters didn’t seem to blame Josh as much as they blamed the media for dredging up the past. Jessa said the magazine broke the store about the incidents in 2002 and 2003 during the happiest time of her life, when she was a newlywed and expecting a child, while Jill said the family had dealt with the situation at the time properly. However, they did note that there was a time when they couldn’t trust their older brother, although they had forgiven him.
Jill, with tears in her eyes, said that bringing up the past felt like having it rubbed in her face.
Older sister Jana also cried on the episode, recalling being told by her mom Michelle of Josh’s cheating.
Fans of the Canadian pop star went crazy after he posted pictures of him with an unknown woman.
Justin Bieber has a mystery woman, and it’s driving fans crazy.
The 21-year-old Canadian pop superstar uploaded an Instagram picture of himself standing close to an unknown woman in front of a sporty black Audi, her face obscured by Bieber’s body, according to a People.com report.
The caption on the photo was quite cryptic: “Lord knows.” Only the woman’s right leg can be seen in the picture.
Fans flooded the comment section of the picture, demanding to know who the mystery woman was, or if the person was actually photoshopped.
But Bieber had no answers for his fans. Instead, he uploaded another picture, this time of himself with other people in a dimly lit room. Most of the people in the group were women, although there’s no indication if any of them were in the picture.
One thing’s for sure: it’s not former girlfriend Selena Gomez. People quoted a source as saying Bieber isn’t getting back with her, even though they remain on good terms with each other and care about each other.
The Last Week Tonight funnyman had some advice for last minute gift givers.
If you’ve still got Christmas shopping to do and are desperate for some advice, fear not, because John Oliver from HBO’s Last Week Tonight is here to help you.
He posted a short video clip on some top regifting strategies, and noted that many people will have to resign themselves to getting subpar gifts, like a scented candle or an Edible Arrangement, something that says: “I don’t know you very well, but if you’re anything like me, you have to eat, or else you’ll die.”
Oliver went down a list of the do’s and don’ts of regifting. For one thing, make sure you’re not regifting something from someone who is closely related to the recipient — that could make things awkward if they find out. Also, present the recycled gift in a stunning fashion that makes up for the fact that it’s a regifting job — don’t use a gift bag, although even that has its virtues: “Gift bags are the sweatpants of gift wrapping: Sure, it’s lazy, but it’s undeniably better than not putting on anything at all.”
And if you get a present you don’t want, there’s another way to get rid of it. Secret Santa gift exchanges at the office are the perfect place to dump unwanted stuff.
“It’s like peeing in the ocean: Sure, it’s not right, but it’s an ultimately harmless solution to an urgent problem,” Oliver said.
