Guardians leads Labor Day weekend box office

The science fiction film Guardians of the Galaxy won the box office on Labor Day weekend.

The science fiction film Guardians of the Galaxy won the box office on Labor Day weekend. The blockbuster starring Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, and Vin Diesel was a summer success critically and commercially. It was the top choice for audiences this holiday weekend, over As Above So Below and The November Man. The movie has held strong in theatres since being released on August 1, crossing the $500 million mark. It is based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name.

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians tells the story of a team of superheroes trying to save the world. After Peter Quill steals an orb from outer space, he becomes the target of Ronan the Accuser, who leads a manhunt against him. Quill gathers his team to fight this power from the galaxy. With strong material and impressive special effects, the film has become a major hit and the biggest film for 2014. It has action, humor and heart to make it yet another blockbuster in the string of successful films based on Marvel Comics. A sequel is planned and will be released in 2017. Saldana stars in two other science fiction series-Star Trek and Avatar.

After Labor Day weekend, Guardians will surpass Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It helped a summer that saw lackluster sales at the box office. Ironman star Robert Downey Jr. called it the best Marvel movie yet. The film was released by Disney, which helped with marketing. Competition was rather weak, which helped Guardians claim the top spot in theatres. Marvel Studios has more films to produce, and if the success of Guardians is any indication, the sequel is anticipated to be a blockbuster as well. It was a hit with Labor Day weekend moviegoers, and with luck, 2017 will see another Guardians hit.

To the left to the left, Beyonce wants these scandals to the left, to the left

From marriage rumors to surrogate’s claiming paternity to BET messing with Blue Ivy’s hair — the Queen Bey is OVER IT.

This year has been a constant whirlwind of rumors and drama when it comes to Beyonce, and she just wants it all to be over soon.

Back in May of this year is where it all essentially began. It was then that the elevator incident seen round the world went down. After her sister Solange attacked Jay Z in an elevator, people speculated what the beef could have been about. Fingers pointed at the idea that Jay was cheating on Beyonce and that Solange was just defending her sister. That was just the beginning.

With that thought in the air it was not wise for the singer to go and change the lyrics in one of her songs during a concert to ones that lamented on the idea that Jay had cheated on her.  That only fueled those speculations more.

In the midst of all that the power couple was hit with another blow, a woman claimed to be their daughter’s biological mother. This piece of drama was more laughable than anything as the woman also had made similar claims towards Michael Jackson and Kim Kardashian.

Speaking of their daughter, Blue Ivy even got some drama in her direction because of her natural locks at the recent MTV Video Music Awards. Blue has gotten some haters in the past for her curly hair, but BET took things a little too far on Monday when guest host Karrueche Tran said, “I really did wake up like this, because my parents never comb my hair.”

Tran did not write that “joke” and BET’s president, Stephen Hill,  did apologize on behalf of the network and to Tran he tweeted, “We also apologize to her for putting her in that position.”

Hopefully all of this, the divorce rumors and the nonsense surrounding Blue’s alleged biological mother and hair, will be over soon so that Beyonce can continue to worry about her world domination.

What will be this year’s MTV VMAs showstopper?

There is a lot of talk on what events might go down at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

There is a lot of talk on what events might go down at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. This awards show always has moments that are talked about. There are many nominees and performances that will get lots of attention. Some wonder if Nicki Minaj will have a racy act or if Beyonce and Jay Z will appear happy, despite rumors of divorce. Other notable nominees include Eminem, Iggy Azalia, and Pharrell Williams.

The VMAs have had their share of moments that get major attention. Last year, the raunchy performance with Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke got plenty of buzz, with many criticizing the singer for lack of originality. Beyonce, who is receiving a lifetime achievement honor, broke a record on social media when she revealed she was pregnant. It got the most tweets ever on Twitter. There was also the touching Michael Jackson tribute by Madonna. The show features memorable performances and showcase the best in popular music videos. A number of performers are also expected to generate buzz. Some of them include Lorde, Gwen Stefani, and Demi Lovato.

Other big artists like Ariana Grande, Rita Ora, Katy Perry will also have eyes on them. Women are most of the nominees in the Video of the Year category. The anticipation is building on who will be this year’s showstopper. Many artists have gained notoriety in their career at these awards. It makes sense for a show created by MTV. There are a lot of contenders which will make for an interesting show. The moonmen awards are lining up, and fans will tune in to see if their favorite artist wins. Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and other social media platforms will eagerly wait to see which performer makes their mark this year. The MTV Video Music Awards air Sunday night at 9pm.

Super Bowl has requested its half-time performers ‘pay to play’

Final candidates were asked if they’d be willing to financially contribute to their half-time performances.

The NFL’s Super Bowl Half Time show is stirring controversy months before it airs. According to the Wall Street Journal, the league narrowed down candidates for its 2015 show in Phoenix to 3 acts and reached out to all of them to ask if they’d be willing to financially contribute to the league for the privilege of being the headliners. Apparently the response from the current nominees—Katy Perry, Coldplay, and Rihanna—was not extremely positive.

NFL spokeswoman Joanna Hunter commented that all performer contracts would be confidential and that the league’s only goal was to “to put on the best possible show.” Half-time musical acts have never been paid for their performances, but the league has frequently covered travel and performance costs. The show has also provided “reimbursement” in the form of its built-in advertising appeal; both Beyonce (starring in 2013) and Bruno Mars (starring in 2014) announced new tours the Monday after their performance.

The Journal’s article suggests that ticket sales and publicity may not be as strong motivators for the final candidates, as Perry, Rihanna, and Coldplay already demonstrate extremely strong concert ticket and music sales. Forbes Magazine disagrees with the idea for different reasons, questioning both if it would affect the cache of being the chosen artist and wondering how advertising revenue during the show would be fairly split between the league and musicians. Forbes also questions how the NFL could enforce performance and creative decisions on acts that have paid for their time.

What’s in a name? Microsoft considered Internet Explorer name change

Internet Explorer development team members have revealed Microsoft considered changing the name of the popular Internet browser, to distinguish the improved version from its bad reputation.

What’s in a name? For Microsoft, enough to consider changing the Internet Explorer name. Internet Explorer development team members revealed renaming the popular Internet browser had been discussed internally, to distance the new version from negative perceptions about earlier versions of the browser.  The information was revealed in a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” feature, reports Tech Times.

“It’s been suggested internally; I remember a particularly long email thread where numerous people were passionately debating it,” wrote Jonathan Sampson of the Internet Explorer development team. “Plenty of ideas get kicked around about how we can separate ourselves from negative perceptions that no longer reflect our product today.”

Differentiating the newer versions of Internet Explorer from their slow and unsafe predecessors is a Microsoft priority.

The latest versions of Internet browsers offer better stability, higher performance and wider support, said Microsoft. It might take a while for users to forget about the bad reputation of Internet Explorer, as many people continue to use older versions.

In the Reddit feature, the IE development team also admitted lagging behind Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome regarding browser extensions, but they are looking to improve in that area.

The Metro version of Internet Explorer for the Windows 8 operating system does not support extensions. The team is making sure that extensions will not compromise Windows 8 computer and user security.

Internet Explorer is the most used desktop Internet browser, holding 58.01 percent of the market, according to data from Net Applications. The most popular version is Internet Explorer 8, at 21.56 percent.

Internet Explorer 8 was the browser that came with the Windows 7 operating system. Now that Internet Explorer 11 has been released, a problem could arise if users refuse to upgrade their browser version.

Mac users should not hold their breath–a Mac version of Internet Explorer should not be expected any time soon.

Robin Williams memorial: somber goodbye to legendary funny man

Hollywood is still reeling from the tragic and unexpected death of legendary comedian Robin Williams.

Hollywood is still reeling from the tragic and unexpected death of legendary comedian Robin Williams. At 63, he committed suicide, devastating family, friends, and fans. Various people in the entertainment industry were saddened to hear of his passing. A somber and low-key memorial is arranged in the Bay area.

Williams was a comedian who had a successful career in film and television. He was known for his hyper, manic style on stage, and was considered a genius in the genre. His best work includes Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society, and Good Will Hunting, which he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. With Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg, he founded Comic Relief USA, a benefit to raise money for the homeless. Williams was known as a man who made countless people laugh, who had a great heart and gave back to others.

The comedian was also open about his struggles with sobriety. He had alcohol and cocaine addictions and went to rehab a few times to get sober. Though he was successful, other health issues got in the way. In 2009, he had open heart surgery, and this year checked himself into rehab again for treatment. To add to that, he had the early stages of Parkinson’s disease. Perhaps, most telling was the fact that he was dealing with severe depression. On August 11, he was found dead and the news spread quickly. Fans gathered to mourn and pay their respects with makeshift memorials.

Williams was married three times and had three children. His third wife Susan Schneider is coping with his death. For the memorial, a source said, “It will be small. They were both very private people.” Williams has several upcoming films due in theatres. The world continues to grieve at the loss of a comedic icon.

Chris Martin’s life after Gwyneth leads to Jennifer Lawrence

E! News confirms that the pair have been spending time together since the end of June, after Lawrence split with her X-Men costar Nicholas Hoult.

No one in Hollywood saw this one coming: Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and one of Hollywood’s top-paid actresses, Jennifer Lawrence are reportedly dating.

E! News confirms that the pair have been spending time together since the end of June, after Lawrence split with her X-Men costar Nicholas Hoult.

Martin and ex Gwyneth Paltrow announced their separation in March. The former couple have been married for over ten years and announced their split on the Oscar winner’s website, Goop. The blog post was titled,  Conscious Uncoupling.

The couple are still amicable with each other and were still living at the same residence in June, according to E! News. Martin and Paltrow have two children together, a daughter named Apple and a son named Moses. Curbed Hamptons is reporting that Martin even went so far as to rent the house next door to his estranged wife and their children while vacationing in the Hamptons this summer.

Paltrow, 41, won an Oscar in 1999 for her role in the movie Shakespeare in Love. She is rumored to be dating Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk, 43. Falchuk also co-created the series American Horror Story and was a writer and executive producer on the cable television series Nip/Tuck.

Lawrence, 24, won an Oscar in 2013 for her role in the movie Silver Linings Playbook. The 13-year age difference between Martin and Lawrence does not seem to be a factor in their relationship. E! News reported that the pair were seen at an afterparty for Coldplay’s July 1 gig at London’s The Royal Albert Hall.

TMNT 2 in the works after 65 million box office sales

Audiences can prepare for a sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Audiences can prepare for a sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The action/science fiction film opened strongly in theatres. It debuted to 65 million at the box office. The movie stars Megan Fox and Will Arnett and uses CGI effects to create the ninja turtles. It is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay and Nickelodeon Movies. Bay was also behind the Transformers franchise, with Fox in the first two of its films. With a successful opening, a sequel is already in the works.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is based on the comic series of the same name. First published in 1984, it is about four teenage anthropomorphic turtles trained in the art of ninjutsu. Named after Renaissance artists, they are mentored by a rat, also anthropomorphic. The turtles live in a sewer in New York City and fight crime. The franchise was hugely successful in the 1980s and continued on in the 1990s, gaining worldwide recognition and spawning merchandise, including toys and video games. A live-action film was released in 1990, along with two sequels.

In the 2014 film, Fox plays April O’Neill, a news reporter who witnesses crime being committed by the Foot Clan, a mysterious group causing trouble. She teams up with the ninja turtles to bring them to justice. TMNT was a highly anticipated film, and while it opened to mixed reviews, it proved to be a box office hit. The turtles display advanced fighting skills, along with plenty of laughs. They are also portrayed with CGI effects, as opposed to actors in turtle costumes in the previous live-action films.

The sequel will hit theatres in the summer of 2016. Bay and Nickelodeon Movies will continue to be the producers. Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Leonardo will be back for more fun, action, and crime-fighting.
